Folks are already starting to dig in and plant at the Manchester Community and Education Garden. There are still some plots available. Even if you’ve never gardened, you’ll have plenty of folks around to help with all the support and know-how you need to have a successful garden.

Plan to grow a Row for M.O.W. (Meals on Wheels) and help provide even more fresh nutritious food to the local community!

This week’s uncooperative weather hasn’t dampened the spirits of the two dozen Dorset School students participating in The Tutorial Center’s Field Studies program.

The two week program led by Jim Gunn and Jen Lalor, allows students to explore the natural world through hands-on lessons that culminate in individual portfolio presentations.

Jim Gunn, environmental science instructor here at The Tutorial Center had brought in a tree branch that contained a brown silk cocoon to help students (and staff!) learn about nature. The Cecropia moth, the largest native moth in North America, decided to eclose right before our digital photography class this morning and provided a rare opportunity for ultra close up photography of a very beautiful insect. The branch was then taken outside where it will finish plumping its wings and eventually fly off.

Some are looking for an extra boost with schoolwork, some are trying to learn new employment skills, or pursue a passion like photography. And some, like Robby, need an alternative way to learn and meet their academic requirements while they pursue their individual goals.

We’re all so proud of this young man as he achieves his snowboard dreams and meets his educational responsibilities—both successfully.

That was the reaction of an Arizona Dept. of Education manager after attending TTC Executive Director Jack Glade’s workshop describing The Tutorial Center and its successful Youth Agriculture Project, given at the recent National Dropout Prevention Forum for Native and Tribal Communities. The attendees were educators from Native American communities across America — think Hawaii, Iowa, Alaska, Montana, the Dakotas, Florida as well as Arizona, New Mexico and Utah — looking to learn about educational programs that have proven results in helping high school dropouts reconnect to education and become high school graduates. Nationally, Native American communities experience very high dropout rates. Jack shared the successes of the Youth Agriculture Project and presented a model for replicating the Project in other communities.
