Our new summer Writing for College class is an anxiety-busting, skill-building, and understanding-deepening program that will help you prepare for the level of writing your college professors will expect.

• Review the basics of good academic writing
• Refresh essentials like thesis, structure, and argument
• Explore the more sophisticated techniques used in college-level writing.

You will be introduced to some of the most common assignment types, including close readings, the “lens” essay, and the research paper.

You will leave the class with a solid grounding in the fundamentals of academic writing, and a good sense of what to expect (and how to handle it!) at the start of Freshman year.

This course will meet Mondays for 6 consecutive weeks:
July 8, 15, 22 & 29, August 5 & 12
Time: 10-12:30 or 1-3:30 (2.5 hours)

Come help ready our Community Garden for the 2013 growing season. Help refresh the site and meet some fun people, too. Each year, gardeners from throughout the area use this community resource to grow fresh, organic food for their families. Plus, a large amount of food grown here is donated to Meals on Wheels and families in need.

You can help with garden plot clean-up, deer fence maintenance, mulching, wood-chip pathway repair and creation, grass/weed removal, removing stones, creation of a new composting bin, tilling. There are tasks large and small for all interests, skills and abilities.

Meet at the Manchester Community and Educational Garden site, at the back end of the Dana Thompson Recreation Center near the Rod and Gun Club. Please park in the regular Rec Center parking lots, not the Rod and Gun Club lot.

Bring work gloves and tools if you can: rakes, shovels, pitchforks, hammers, wheelbarrows.

The Tutorial Center is pleased to introduce you to our new YAP farm manager, Ryan Dixon.

Ryan will be working with YAP leader Katherine Keys and YAP crews, interns and volunteers to establish our newest property: YAP Farm at Hiland Hall in North Bennington. Learn more about Ryan.

As more people hear about our YAP and its successes, I’m getting more and more questions from other education centers and schools about starting up their own agricultural or gardening project. The COABE national conference provided a way to talk with people from around the country about how programs like YAP change the way individuals and communities think about personal development, food and community.

Thanks to our many committed YAP instructors, volunteers, crews, and supporters. I was proud to share the YAP story and highlight its positive results.

The Manchester Community Garden is getting ready to rock and roll for the 2013 Season. Now’s your chance to reserve your spot. Every season is more successful than the last! We’re expecting even more  space reservations this year so don’t wait, do it now while it’s on your mind.

SAT/PREP

Our popular Sunday college test prep classes have been scheduled for students taking the MAY SAT. This is a great way to sharpen your testing skills in both verbal and math.

A maximum of 10 students will be allowed to register.    A minimum of 5 students must register for the class to run.  Students MUST PURCHASE The Princeton Review 2013 edition of Cracking the SAT.  This can be purchased at the Northshire Bookstore or through Amazon.com.  Students do NOT need the edition containing the CD pieces.  The course will focus on the following:

Writing:  commonly tested SAT grammar errors, sentence structure errors, and essay planning and writing.

Reading Comprehension:  Critical reading of long and short passages, identifying the main idea, picking out details, making inferences, and identifying vocabulary in context.

Math:  Systematic strategies for tackling math questions, review of basic math concepts, and review of advanced math concepts.

While homework will not be assigned each week, practice is essential for improving an SAT score.  We encourage all students to review their work weekly and to come to class with questions.
